Stunning architecture
Børge Ousland, the famous Norwegian polar explorer, purchased the fifty-five-acre island of Manshausen in 2010. His vision was to create an exclusive vacation destination that would elegantly combine the Arctic’s ruggedness with a striking modern architectural design. Out of this unique concept, the Manshausen resort was commissioned and erected. Architect Snorre Stinessen was inspired by the majestic surrounding landscape and designed a unique resort tailored for the wildest explorers out there. Perched over the water and overlooking a spectacular scenery, each one of our seven sea cabins are perfectly angled to maximize our guests’ view of the surrounding landscape, while providing absolute privacy. Inside is a double bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the coastline, and a second spare bedroom. Every sea cabin was constructed and assembled on site. The structures were designed to limit any impact on the pristine environment and highlight the beauty of the landscape. The Manshausen sea cabins’ architecture has won four awards in the prestigious Architizer competition. With entries from over 100 countries worldwide into this architecture competition, it is an extreme honor for the creators of Manshausen to have received several Architizer awards thus far.
In addition, an 18th-century farmhouse was converted into the main house. There you will find a restaurant, fully equipped kitchen, and dining lounge. In the main house there’s also an expedition library, stocked with books from Børge’s personal collection. Our guest can also enjoy the relaxing hot tubs, a saltwater pool, a private beach, and pristine wilderness at their doorstep.
